Aldrin, Jr ., LMP Born: October 31, 1930, Rome, Italy Space flights: Gemini 10, Apollo 11 Son of an Army general, Michael Collins was raised in a half dozen places: San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C ., among them. Perhaps as a result of his upbringing, Collins developed a broader view of the world than many of his pilot colleagues. By the time he became an astronaut in 1963, after graduating from the Air Force's "space school," he had served as a fighter pilot and test pilot.
